What is the HOSA Competitive Events Program?

HOSA is about providing opportunities for students to learn and achieve. One unique way of doing that is by offering 44 different competitive events that are curriculum based. The goal of the program is to get students to stretch their learning potential.

Take for example a high school senior who thinks he/she wants to be a Veterinarian. To help that student, HOSA offers the veterinary Assisting event. In order to compete successfully in this event, the student must study concepts of Veterinary medicine and learn a set of skills related to the occupational field. Many students who participate in this event will volunteer their time in a Veterinary practice to learn and refine their skills. The average national competitor in this event spends an additional 42 hours outside the classroom in preparation for this event, with the goal of becoming a national champion.

HOSA's goals for that student are to encourage him/her to learn more about the career field and to get a real sense for what it will take to become a Veterinarian. This approach is intended to:

Help the student in career decision making. Give the student a "learning edge" for future veterinary medicine related courses. Provide the student with a clearer picture of his/her goal, and what will need to happen in order to achieve it. Where do health professionals fit in? They review the event guidelines, sponsor the event at area clinical facilities, and serve as event judges in evaluating student performance.

HOSA is proud to maintain a healthy partnership with the health care community. We are a scholastic student organization that is 100 percent healthcare - and an organization whose mission is to support the delivery of compassionate, quality healthcare. For more information on partnering with HOSA, please contact Mark Burley, Michigan HOSA Director, at hosa@mhc.org.
