It's a new officer team, new students, fresh ideas, and a new HOSA year (not to mention an entirely new year since I last blogged... whoops!). Time to rock and roll!

I always say, if you've experienced one HOSA fall, you've experienced ONE HOSA fall. They seem to look different every year, and this year's does not disappoint. Last year we hosted the largest MIHOSA conference with over with 2,100 registered participants.... This year it's School Visit Mania. My goal: visit every HOSA chapter int he state. Crazy, you ask? Yup, I think so.

This I know to be true... teachers and students deserve it. I'll keep you posted on the visits.

With listen.grooveshark.com, I can make a playlist of all the songs I want (for free), re-organize them if need be, save as many different playlists as I choose, and view other peoples’ playlists. On top of that I can email my favorite playlists to friends and by pressing the link they can play my faves from their browser immediately. If I wanted to make a list of songs that remind me of HOSA, I’d make my playlist, save, and email it to anyone I choose.

I’m a big fan of music but I rarely take the time to search for new stuff. So if you can do me a favor, I’d be most appreciative. Make a playlist on listen.grooveshark.com titled, ‘Mark’s Music Gift’ and send me the link to hosa@mhc.org. Just so you don’t waste your time, I am no fan of rap. Beyond that I’m a fan of almost anything (yes, even country).

My favorite genre of music is modern folk. Basically ‘a dude and his guitar’ is right in my wheelhouse. I made this playlist today. It’s got a few artists on there a multiple times but they’re totally worth it. Have fun… Today’s Favorites

Two of the Michigan HOSA State officers and I recently visited Washington D.C. for the National HOSA Washington Leadership Academy. While we there we stormed ‘The Hill’. We made visits to several Congressional delegate offices just to make sure they were well informed about our wonderful organization. My local Representative, Congressman Mike Rogers, was generous enough with his time to speak to our entire group. You can see here Michigan HOSA’s President Jessica Newvine and President-Elect Kaylee Moreno standing with Congressman Rogers.

It was interesting how everyone in D.C. seem to revolve around the current healthcare reform bill. I agree that it’s important and it will have a monumental effect on our nation’s economic future… but I couldn’t help but wondered what they’d all be worried about if healthcare wasn’t this year’s topic. What ‘major calamity’ would they have drummed up? I was overwhelmed by the perception that this issue was life and death (no pun intended). The last time we were there it was ‘the bailout.’ We heard time and time again how honored we were to be visiting during a time of pivotal change. It makes me wonder what it will be next year. What a shame it must be to live in a state of perceived crisis.

Departed Monday - arrived home late Wednesday night.
As they say about the tombstone; “It’s the dash between the two dates that counts.” I love Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and all its beauty. But more than that I love the people. It’s impossible to leave the U.P. feeling unwelcome or under appreciated. It truly is one of my favorite times of year when HOSA puts on the U.P Fall Conferences. The past two days have been spent interacting with 300 students from across Michigan’s better half. Besides learning about HOSA and developing leadership skills, we did a fair amount of laughing (usually a good sign) and a load of fun. It’d be a while but I’m already looking forward to heading back.

My itinerary at this year’s HOSA National Leadership Conference is slightly extensive. Unless I someday become the National Executive Director, chances are this will be the busiest NLC I ever experience. The National staff was nice enough to take the state officer training off my schedule. Alas, I just couldn’t have it.

The state officer academy is my reminder of why we do what we do. It’s the greatest payoff, the perfect connection with the students. Without it I’d feel as if I was looking in from the outside. Leading, but not knowing my constituents. No to mention it’s a complete blast!

My friend Jamie has contributed significantly to Michigan HOSA. Besides assuring each room at the State Conference is set up accurately before their event, he is credited with the title ‘G-merge’ (HOSA’s service project), the ‘JUMP’ theme, as well as the JUMP logo and 2009 conference T-shirt design. Can’t leave out the name of this year’s fall mega conference, ‘Leadership University’, is his brainchild. Where would we be without Jamie?

He called me yesterday as he was visiting Meijer’s. He said he had just seen a young man walking through the store with a HOSA JUMP T-shirt.

Sweeeeet! I love that. It’s perfect. That kid had no idea he was wearing Jamie’s design, yet it was the ideal honor. Keep sporting the HOSA Tee’s.

It’s not every day when your organization grows large enough or develops a new program that warrants a new employee. Today is that day! The best part, it’s an achieved goal. Bradley and I have been talking for over a year about the idea. What can we do, how can we do it, what needs to happen to bring him on staff? We’ve been working together to ensure this outcome. And viola, it’s go time!

I am pleased to announce that Bradley Bell will be joining the Michigan HOSA family as a full-time employee on June 29, 2009. Let’s hear an explosion enthusiasm?

“Think big, act small.” That’s my mantra for the next year. Let’s use every means possible to help ensure people feel ‘connected’ with HOSA and each other over the next year. Technology is helping us with this effort. We can stay up-to-date with immediate feeds through Twitter and Facebook. Michigan HOSA is having a huge fall conference (called Leadership University) on November 2 here in Lansing. I love the idea that students will be able to provide instantaneous feedback during the sessions. Can you imagine an interactive conference like that? At first I thought Michigan HOSA was sending a hundred less people to the 2009 National Leadership Conference than last year. The numbers looked low for so long. Even the day before registration was due we were 80 people shy of last year’s mark. I’m not positive as to how many we’re sending now but I’m pretty sure we’ve exceeded last year’s attendance. This is the year to bring your friend. More family and guests are coming than I can ever remember. Who’d have thought Nashville would prove the big draw?

Candidate You know how the Chinese calendar has the year of Monkey, Dog, Rat, Dragon, etc.? With all the amazing things happening to HOSA this year (+33% membership, 1,500+ at state, Board Chair for me), I figure 2009 is ‘The Year of the Michigan HOSA.’ And since we’re under the good graces of the HOSA Gods, why not milk it, right? We’re running two students for the National Executive Council (National Office) and Bradley Bell (former MI HOSA State President) is running for the National HOSA Inc. Board of Directors. Michigan HOSA has the potential to bring back some accolades not of the metallic nature.

I’m moved by what HOSA can provide. Lives change, smiles beam, chests rise, and spirits are lifted by the opportunities through HOSA. I’ve never been more proud to be part of this organization. It’s not fake, hype, or smoke and mirrors. People are really doing great things as part of HOSA.

So there I was, on my way back from visiting a school. Lunch time was fast approaching. My options were drive back to the office and grab some food on the way or… back track a few hundred yards and invite a friend out to lunch. And when I say friend, I mean some guy I kind of know. We don’t regularly have lunch and the invitation would seem… surprising, I guess.

Alas, I did it. I went back, made the pitch, ate a decent wrap and… well it was just sweeeeet!!! It was one of those conversations that when you’re done you’re saying, “Holy cow, where did that come from?!?” It was deep, fun, unexpected, and well needed. I’m glad to it happened.

Do you ever think we’re all a little more connected than meets the eye? It seems this guy needed the invite just as much as I needed the conversation. Ain’t it funny how that happens?

The best part about being the HOSA director is interacting with the state officers. The worst part about being a HOSA director is watching them move on. It’s difficult to sever the ties year after year after year. I understand it’s all part of the plan but man, it stinks. Yup, the position is designed to bring the same positive experience to a new group every year blah blah blah... Whatever! Sometimes you just want them to stick around forever.

For some reason unbeknownst to me I have been very excited about the new crew. As fate would have it we had our officer training last week and to say the least they did not disappoint. What a crack up team! I have no idea if they’re intelligent, unselfish, strong, or hard working… but they are funny, both deliberately and unintentionally. It should be a good year. I’ll keep you posted.

And so begins my most cherished time of the year. Some like Christmas. Some enjoy the colors of fall and others the pleasures of vacation. Me… I love the spell between the Regional and State Leadership Conferences. My current checklist has 90 fabulous items quickly turning yellow (clarification: I highlight items yellow once they’ve been completed).

The fall is enjoyable because it’s a time to meet the new students and teachers soon to join the HOSA family. The drawback of fall is that every day is a new day. I might absolutely rock a school visit on Monday but the new students I see on Tuesday could care less about what happened yesterday.

The hustle and bustle of January and February hit a sweet spot in my heart due to its fast pace and need for… creative problem solving… no pun intended. Conducting nine conferences at nine different locations from the tip of the U.P. to the east and west corners of southern Michigan with nine separate regional coordinators for 2,700 students in a span of 34 days commands an exceptional amount of energy. Gotta love it!

Given the choice between sitting at a desk all day and speaking to a group a 250 students, any other time of the year I’d pick the speaking engagement seven days a week and twice on Sunday. I’m not a planner or detail oriented (shocking, I know). For some reason completely contrary to my ‘people oriented’ personality, I adore planning the state conference. I like the idea that my work tomorrow is contingent upon my efforts today. It’s a process of building an experience for a well deserving group of people. That holds value.

In a very short 34 days 1,200 students and teachers from across the state will take pleasure in the culmination of a mass effort. Students practice endless hours. Teachers give of their time and energy to benefit the students. Hundreds will voluntarily give up a valuable chunk of time to ensure students reap a reward… and maybe a little taste of sweet success.

As you look forward to the Michigan HOSA State Leadership Conference and whatever you must do to prepare for the event, enjoy the journey.

It’s rare when we have a ‘Where were you?’ moment and it’s a good thing. I can paint a fairly accurate picture of where I was when I first heard about the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the night O.J. Simpson was chased in a white Bronco and the day of his verdict, the evening President Clinton announced his guilt, and the day the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded in 1986.

These are the moments that catch us by surprise and metaphorically knock us off balance. They are unfortunate and undesired. Yesterday’s Inauguration resembled all the qualities of the fore mentioned moments but one... it was anything but negative or unfortunate. On the contrary it was a moment that our nation and current generation can be most proud of. I imagine anyone with a developed memory will never forget. The United State of America inaugurated an African American to the highest ranking office in this nation. Regardless of your political beliefs, that is worthy of commendation.

African Americans weren’t even allowed to vote 139 years ago, let alone run for office and win. Rosa Parks was ordered to give up her seat for a white passenger on a bus 54 years ago. It was only 46 years ago when Martin Luther King, Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and bellowed, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."”

I am not so ignorant to believe that racism is a thing of the past. But, it is my hope that the subtle and sometimes monumental leaps we take today will cause my children to stagger at the thought that someone was once judged simply by the color of their skin.

My colleagues and I watched and wept as a streaming live internet feed of President Barack Obama’s Inauguration flooded our Board Room. I sat three tables from the front on the right side of the room, the lights were off, the room was silent, all but for words that echoed in our ears, “…so help me God.”

If given the choice and freedom to do anything I want, in most cases I’m going to choose some kind of sport. That’s the honest to goodness truth and has been for basically my entire life. The idea of reading a book never really appealed to me… until after I graduated college. In the past year I’ve read more books than the sum of the preceding (I’m not sure if that’s an exaggeration). But something happened last night that’s providing a great sense of pride today. I turned a new leaf in my life. It only took me four months to do it but ‘stick a fork in it’ because it’s done! Yes, I finished the last book (Breaking Dawn) in the Twilight serious. After 2,446 pages of teenage emotional overload, I can say it’s time to move on. They’re good books… slightly disturbed that young girls are reading them… and they possess some awkward behaviors that I don’t necessarily condone… but for the most part, very entertaining. The point and the best part about reading these books is that I’ve had more conversations with my young friends about these silly books than any other inlet into their life. For that they are well worth the time spent.

Having said all that, I need some physical challenges to get me back in gear. I feel like a lazy book-slug (opposed to a bookworm). Let the games begin!

I had the ‘privilege’ of spending this weekend with 400 high school students at a camp north of Cadillac. My cabin consisted of 14 sophomore guys whom most of which I have known for five years now. During the weekend a friend of mine asked me, “What’s it like leading the same cabin of guys for five years?” (note: we also do a weeklong summer camp every year)

See the assumption is that familiarity breeds simplicity and growth. I’d definitely concur intimacy brings with it a sensation of relaxation and informality. However, this only opens the door for 16 year old boys to conduct themselves without restraint, self-control or limitation. (Details relating to the minds and actions of sixteen year old boys are far too inappropriate for this blog. Alas, I will refrain from divulging such particulars.) Nevertheless, despite their crude hormonal and completely unimaginative jesting, there are moments of genuine decency. These moments catch me off guard. I love watching young men extend an unselfish gesture for the sake of another.

So I guess my answer is, “Having the same cabin of guys provides an authentic environment which is simultaneously nauseating and heartwarming.” You got to hand it to those guys. That’s not an easy combo to pull off.

I could never bring myself to purchase one of those driving GPS systems. I’ve been driving across the country since 1993 without the use of a GPS device. Justifying the expense was beyond practical. However, I had so many points racked up on my work credit card that I was ordered to use some of them. Considering the fact that I drive about 40K miles per year I took the plunge and used my points on a GPS device.

OMG!!! I used it five times yesterday while visiting two schools, a Caribou Coffee, a friend’s house between trips and finding the quickest route home. It only requires an address and viola you’re on your way! I love it. Like so many other pieces of technology I waited to get I’m wondering what took me so long.

I try really hard to be good at what I do, whatever that may entail. Traditionally I attack life with a Babe Ruth Philosophy, a.k.a ‘swing for the fence.’ This method on the surface may sound like a positive way to approach life because after all, Babe Ruth was the homerun king. However, Babe Ruth also led the league in strike outs as well. When you’re swinging for the fence the methodology becomes slightly unpredictable. It’s fun when you connect because you win big. The feeling is wonderful after smacking a project, presentation, meeting, or conference out of the park.

Alas, homeruns walk hand-in-hand with strike outs and today I’m recovering after a pathetic strike last night. You’d think after falling on my face so many times that I’d grow used the sensation. It’s only normal to anticipate an off presentation every once in a while, right? Wrong! I can’t stand it! My mistakes relentlessly occupy my thoughts. I repeat the speech over and over in my head with mounting distain building with every replay.

Strikeouts are wonderful reminders that keep our egos grounded. As the saying goes, “Experience is what we get when we don’t get what we want.” In the long-run I’m usually satisfied with the lessons they provide. In the short-run I would have been satisfied with another homerun!

When I begin a new HOSA school year (even after nine years), I’m still a little jittery. I question my ability to connect with the students. Well, last Friday was my first opportunity to brush away the cobwebs at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor. Following my visit I concluded this… I’m thrilled to be doing this for another year! I laughed hard and smiled often. Student contact after a long summer of office work is a great reminder of why we’re working so hard.

In HOSA we have rule that there are no ‘problems,’ only ‘opportunities.’ More times than I can count I’ve experienced situations that when at first presented seemed negative, turned out wonderful in the long-run. The long-run is the operative word here. This application couldn’t be more accurate after this weekend.

This summer was spent finishing off my basement. And when I say ‘spent’ I mean in terms of time AND finances. Several thousand dollars have been poured into lumber, drywall, paint, plumbing, carpeting, padding, etc, etc. Well, last Tuesday when Katie walked downstairs she quickly noticed her socks becoming saturated with water. She called me at work to tell me that our basement was flooding. I was half way home by the time I hung up the phone. Standing water has a way of destroying a summer project within hours. After a quick assessment of the basement I concluded that the sump pump had broken.

Several steps were taken to salvage the carpeting. These steps included more time and more $$$. Fortunately, through the aid of an extremely helpful restoration service, everything was perfect again by Friday. Through all of it I asked ‘why,’ not in a ‘woe is me’ kind of way but just in a ‘why could it not have happened a few weeks earlier before the carpeting was installed?’

Today, after three days of torrential downpour, flooded streets, over flowing drainage systems and the constant hum of my brand new super-powered sump pump, I am ridiculously delighted that the old pump went out on Tuesday after a comparably small rain. Had the pump gone this weekend, there’s no doubt that the basement would have been completely ruined. Not just the carpeting but everything.

In the case of this weekend, my original problem turned out to be a saving grace.

Evidence provided by my aforementioned wish-list sheds obvious light on my love of speed. I think how ironic it is that my list was posted shortly before this weekend. Why this weekend, you ask? Because I took a nasty 70/mph spill that would have made Evil Knievel proud. On any other surface, I wouldn’t be alive to talk about it… and that’s why I love water sports! Every muscle in my back is painfully aware of the repercussions that occur after such a wipeout and one spot on my back feels like someone took a hammer to it, but I live to ride another day. To err is human, but to forgive divine. So as I give full vent to my folly, please know I share with no actual inclination of acquiring any item of the following treasures (ok, maybe one). If I were to harness my lust for more (and somehow collect unlimited resources), here are eight material items I wouldn’t resist: greed
8. Unlimited world travel… not quite a material item but it costs mucho denaro
7. Airplane… did I say airplane? I meant that I’d like my own person Lockheed-Martin F-22A Raptor
iphone 6. Ski boat… someday… Lord willing, one day
5. Motorcycle… it’ll never happen but boy oh boy would it be fun!
4. I-Phone… not that I need it at all, just for fun
greed 3. Mansion… on a lake of course
2. Lamborghini… but I’d settle for a Porsche 911 Turbo
greed 1. Island in the South Pacific… what? That’s not asking that much, right?

I think most of us are far too materialistic. I am no exception to this statement. My cop out… Society drives our instincts for more, more, and more! Billboards are constantly telling me what I need, be it the fasted sleekest car, the biggest house, the yummiest meal, or the most luxurious vacation which I, according to them, deserve. Katie (the wife) and I have been working hard to decrease our spending habits. We’ve noticed that the less we own, the less we have to get stressed about. Material possessions not only bring the fun of owning them, but the responsibility of upkeep.

For example, I spend many weekends during the summer visiting my Uncle Tom’s cabin. He owns a sweet ski boat and three kick’n jet skis, and then of course the cabin. It seems we’re always fixing something, stressing about what’s going to break next and performing regular maintenance checks to (ironically) keep us from doing that which we never stop doing. One thing for sure, I’m glad it’s his money because I’d be homeless if it were my responsible to cover the expenses.

Like I said, I am NO exception of this lust for more. My dream is to live on a lake with a ski boat. Much of my decreased spending now is so that I can spend more tomorrow. Sad, I know. I began to think of the items and conveniences I’d least like to live without. For your viewing pleasure:
8. Alarm clock… that may sound ridiculous but I’d be late to work every day without it.
7. House… Seriously, how did the nomads do it?
6. Computer… What did people do at work before computers?
5. Ipod/CD player/radio… All used in the car. I’d have way too much time to think if not for these.
4. Internet connection… If I don’t know something, it’s where I go.
3. Bed… I’m all about camping but I pine for the softness of bed when I don’t get it.
2. Cell phone… I try not to use it in the presence of others but texting has become a way of life.
1. Car… I love the convenience of mobility. My life would change drastically without it.

To say I finished off my basement this summer is somewhat misleading. In actuality, it’s been over a year since I (and a brigade of friendly volunteers) started the seemingly never ending process. Nonetheless, 90% of the work was completed in the last two months. Through this elongated project I have learned more “handy-man skills” than I thought possible… all of which the hard way! My mantra through this has been, “It’s NEVER easy!!!” On no account did I accomplish anything without a twist, challenge, complication, or an overwhelming desire to curse a long string of embarrassing profanities. In the end I have come to this conclusion… It’s worth it (note: never in the moment of the twist… retrospect is extremely forgiving).

I spent yesterday morning and afternoon sweating pipes. The term ‘sweating pipes’ meant nothing to me at the start of the summer, let alone knowing how to do it. However this handy-danding skill saved me 700 bones yesterday when I needed to reroute copper pipes to our new water softener. Despite my craving to sledge hammer the stinking project 95% of the time, my family’s silly necessity for water kept me pressing forward. Yesterday's lesson… Sometimes you can do everything right and it still won’t be enough. But, persevere because eventually… eventually… eventually, at least in the case of my shoddy plumbing job, it finally sticks… and the agonizingly dry pursuit pales in comparison to the refreshing surge of victory.

’Thirst…’
Obviously with my life currently consumed with vampires (see yesterday’s post), the word ‘thirst’ possesses all kinds of meaning. Though its use is currently overdone, its definition applies well to a question Katie asked me last night… What are you excited about this fall?

The question itself is innocent and reasonable. Fall does not present a lack of activities, agenda items, responsibilities, or the absence of new relationships. In fact, my schedule is bursting at the seams with pleasurable interactions. In spite of all my blessings, my answer was void of anything specific. It’s possible that I’m so excited about everything that it’s difficult to isolate one moment to which I long for. Or… I am thirsty. Thirsty for one more thing. I glance ahead at a 99% agreeable calendar, yet something inside yearns for the one percent. What that is, I have no idea.

It’s that time. I have been more than negligent in my blogging. What can I say? I needed a break. Now that the school year is on its way… batter up!

Do you ever think the point of your life is to make others laugh? I don’t mean you’re a humorous person in the sense that wit and charm role off your tongue with dazzling intellect. I mean you’re the butt of their jokes! People feel better about themselves because their pointing and laughing AT you.

It is that sensation which currently runs through my blood. My friends find humor in the fact that I am a “young spirit” that appreciates youthful entertainment. Let me explain… I’m a fan of pop music, Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl, High School Musical, and my latest addiction… Twilight. Yes, I understand Twilight is a crazed teenage girl novel filled with dripping emotional banter among vampires. I innocently started the first book in an attempt to connect with my young friends. After the fifth chapter I knew it was only a matter of time before I demolished all four in the series. I finished the first and started the second book yesterday. If the world would kindly stop spinning, I can happily forget all my responsibilities and read my life away for the next couple weeks.

Alas, life doesn’t work that way. Summer is over and it’s back to the grind. A new chapter in our laughable lives starts anew. And the world spins madly on.

There really isn’t a way to sum up this summer. You’d think that after 30+ summers I could compare it to another. Definitely not the case! In fact, nothing at the moment feels similar to... well anything else. It’s not just the addition of the kid… it could be… but it doesn’t seem that way. It’s the reason for my lack of blogging. I just don’t have the words. I’m moving forward, growing and still loving life… it’s just different. Summer is so strange. I have experiences flowing out of my ears but I’m not taking the time to process. Do you ever feel that way? Like life is moving so quickly and the people around you are growing up so fast?

I conclude the summers aren’t long enough. If we had more time to enjoy the weather and the break from school we’d be less compelled to shove as much as we can into a condensed period. Alas, such is life. Therefore, I shall to continue my journey. Maybe I’ll more answer in the fall…

It’s time 234 Michiganders head south. There are a few gold medals in Dallas with our name on them. The HOSA National Leadership Conference takes place next week in Dallas, Texas. This is the moment that so many hard working students have dreamed about all year. The chance to go up against the best in the nation and maybe… just maybe… be the best! I have faith in our students and think we’re going to rock it this year. To all those going, I wish you the best of luck! Safe travels and have fun!

Close to a thousand times a year I’m asked, “What’s HOSA?” In a perfect world I’d pull the following video out of my back pocket. It’s a lot easier to show people what HOSA is rather than inadequately trying to explain it. Alas, we do not live in a perfect world. So I will just have post this on the HOSA blog and hope the world comes here to see it.

I was under the impression that as a HOSA state director I wore many hats. Considering everything here gets done by one and a half staff members, you’d thing we were diverse. After a recent visit to my good friend’s vet clinic (HOSA advisor Dr. Rohwer), I’ve rethought my assumption. In the short three hours that I shadowed his every move (sometimes by afar – note Andy’s procedure below), I witnessed a teeth cleansing on dog named Snickers (dental hygiene), an anterior cruciate ligament ‘ACL’ surgery on a dog named Brady (orthopedic surgery), and a most unfortunate but well needed enema on cat named Andy (gastroenterology). All this in one day… before lunch! It was an intriguing morning to say the least. I now have an immense amount of respect for veterinarians. Their hats are many, not to mention large to fit over their giant brains!

If it weren’t for my K-9 resuscitation skills, Andy might have taken a turn for the worse. As you can tell from the photo, I’m a natural at reviving dogs. If the HOSA director position ever slips through my finger, I might pursue my new calling.

In the eight and a half years that I’ve worked for Michigan HOSA, only two Michigan delegates have run for National officer (ironically in the same year). Unfortunately, neither student received the necessary votes to take office. I’ve got a hunch that the drought is about to end. I’ve heard through the grapevine that Michigan’s celebrated and well known Mr. Bradley Bell plans on running for national office. I cannot speak highly enough about Mr. Bell. He is an extremely well polished individual. The voting delegates would do well to elect this guy. I’m hoping I witness my first successful national officer election. Time shall tell.

Current Sound: Brokenness by Steve Sommerlot

My daughter desires a very specific state of being. At some points during the evening, this precise position is the only one that pacifies her tears. I kid you not, if I even think about changing the particular arrangement, she protests with a whimper. Naturally, it’s not as easy as placing her on her stomach, or sitting her upright, or ensuring that her swing sways at a certain frequency. Oh no, she’s a little more high maintenance than that! Hazel must be held in our arms, turned away from us so she can lookout, and constantly walked. She wishes to be walked… not held, not rocked, not swayed, not sat, not danced, not anything but walked, walked, and walked some more. She settles for nothing less than forward progress. The beauty of this agreement is that you know when it’s right. The world is at peace and all is calm. Her soul finds rest in the comfort of our embracing arms and our perpetual stroll.

Maybe our protest differs slightly from the verbal shriek of an eleven week old but does our disapproval to a disrupted state of being bare resemblance? Nothing Hazel requests varies greatly from my own desires. Do I not hope for warm companionship, an optimistic outlook, and forward progress? If/when any of these are out of whack, I too feel the discomfort. The world is not at peace and I feel unrest. Hazel has taught me this… It is our fault is we choose to be complacent in the face of agitation. My two and a half month old daughter grasps that harmony is worth fighting for. So maybe the question should not be, “Does our disapproval to a disrupted state of being bare resemblance?” but “Should our disapproval to a disrupted state of being bare resemblance?”
