Barbara James Service Award The Barbara James Service Award is in memory of Barbara James, 1982-83 HOSA Inc. Board Chairman. Her leadership skills and contributions to HOSA exemplify the caring and compassion of HOSA members. This award seeks to recognize individual HOSA members whose commitment to community service is worthy of recognition.
Biomedical Debate This event will consist of a Round One written test and a Round Two debate round. The debate round follows a modified Lincoln-Douglas debate format. The topic for both rounds will be announced annually. Teams of 3-4 members will participate in the Round One written test. The teams with the highest average score from on the test will qualify for the debate round. Debate round pairings and position (either the affirmative or negative) are based on random selection.
Biotechnology This event will consist of two rounds of competition. Round One will be a written, multiple choice test of knowledge and understanding. The top scoring competitors will advance to Round Two for the performance of selected skill procedure(s) identified in a written scenario. The scenario will require the use of critical thinking skills. The performance will be timed and evaluated according to the event guidelines.
Career Health Display Teams consisting of two (2) competitors shall develop a visual display of a specific career or cluster of careers in healthcare. The display allows the students to express ideas through an artistic medium to highlight the benefits of a particular career focus. The students will also be judged on their ability to present themselves and communicate the career information to others.
CERT Skills This event will consist of two rounds of competition for a 2-person team. Round One is a written, multiple choice test of knowledge and understanding. The top scoring teams will advance to Round Two for the performance of selected skill procedure(s) identified in a written scenario. The scenario will require the use of critical thinking skills. The performance will be timed and evaluated according to the event guidelines.
Chapter Newsletter Chapters will publish chapter newsletters throughout the year. For the Chapter Newsletter recognition event, chapters will select ONE (1) newsletter and mail it to the HOSA State Office to be judged. All newsletters that reach a pre-determined standard will be awarded a Certificate of Excellence.
Clinical Specialty This event will consist of two items: a) the development of a career portfolio, and b) the demonstration of a selected skill common to the chosen health career. The career portfolio will be created by the competitor to show career understanding and documentation of a related work-based learning experience. The skill portion will consist of the digitally recorded demonstration of a skill related to the chosen career.
Community Awareness Community Awareness is a service project designed to raise community awareness of a health-related issue of local, state and/or national interest. The project, selected by the HOSA chapter, should be one that addresses one specific health issue, need or concern and makes a worthwhile contribution to the community. The project should have a direct relationship to the organization's purposes and to Health Science Education. Activities are then planned to make the community aware of the health issue. The chapter documents each activity as it is planned, conducted and evaluated. When the project is completed, the chapter develops a portfolio that documents and explains the project and activities. A team of 2-4 competitors presents the chapter’s project to a panel of judges in an interview, using the portfolio as documentation of their accomplishments.
CPR/First Aide This event will consist of two rounds of competition for a 2-person team. Round One is a written, multiple choice test of knowledge and understanding. The top scoring teams will advance to Round Two for the performance of selected skill procedure(s) identified in a written scenario. The scenario will require the use of critical thinking skills. The performance will be timed and evaluated according to the event guidelines.
Creative Problem Solving This event will involve two rounds of competition. Round One will consist of a written test to evaluate the team’s understanding of problem solving processes and theories. The top scoring teams will advance to Round Two and will be given a potential problem related to a healthcare issue or the healthcare community. Teams will have 30 minutes to analyze the problem. Selected resource materials related to the problem will be provided. At the end of the preparation time, teams will have ten (10) minutes to present their solution to a panel of judges.
Dental Science This event will consist of two rounds of competition. Round One will be a written, multiple choice test of knowledge and understanding. The top scoring competitors will advance to Round Two for the performance of selected skill procedure(s) identified in a written scenario. The scenario will require the use of critical thinking skills. The performance will be timed and evaluated according to the event guidelines.
Dental Spelling This event shall be divided into two rounds. Round One will be a 50-item written, multiple choice test in 1 hour. The competitors with the top 50% highest scores will proceed to Round Two. Round Two will be a "spell-down" where competitors will spell terms. Definitions will be provided by a definer upon request of the competitor. Competitors will be eliminated when a dental term is misspelled. The last remaining competitor in Round Two becomes the first-place winner.
Dental Terminology This event shall be a written test dealing with selected terms which are common to all dental occupations and others unique to the varied dental specialties. Competitors shall be expected to recognize, identify, define, interpret or apply these terms by responding correctly to 100 multiple choice items in 1 ½ hours.
Emergency Medical Technician This event will consist of two rounds of competition for a 2-person team. Round One is a written, multiple choice test of knowledge and understanding. The top scoring teams will advance to Round Two for the performance of selected skill procedure(s) identified in a written scenario. The scenario will require the use of critical thinking skills. The performance will be timed and evaluated according to the event guidelines.
Epidemiology This event shall be a written examination of concepts related to the study of epidemiology. Individual competitors shall be expected to recognize, identify, define, interpret and apply these concepts in a 50-item multiple choice test and in written responses to a case study.
Extemporaneous Health Poster This event shall be in the form of an individual creation of a poster conducted in a setting with individual work tables and sufficient space for each competitor to carry out his/her form of artistic expression, to be completed within three (3) hours of work time.
Extemporaneous Speaking Competitors shall report to a designated holding room or area. Each competitor shall be called by number to a preparation room and after being presented the topic by the event manager, will have ten (10) minutes to prepare a speech of up to five (5) minutes in length. At the conclusion of the preparation time, the competitor shall be introduced to the judges by competitor number and shall present his or her speech.
Extemporaneous Writi ng Competitors shall report to the site of the event where they will be presented the topic by the event manager. They will have one hour to write an essay on the topic.
Forensic Medicine This event will involve two rounds of competition. Round One will consist of a written test to evaluate the team’s understanding of forensic medicine. The top scoring teams will advance to Round Two and will be given a case study related to forensic medicine. Teams will have six (6) minutes to analyze a case study, which will include written information and may include physical evidence. Finally, teams will be given thirty (30) minutes to write their conclusions.
Health Education This event involves a team of 2-4 members who select a health-related concept or instructional objective, then prepare a lesson, provide instruction, and evaluate results. The instruction must include the use of presentation tools such as a student-made video, computer demonstration software, slides, overhead transparencies, or any other form of media. Teams will provide instruction to a selected group of learners.
Healthy Lifestyle This event will consist of two rounds of competition. Round One will be a written, multiple choice test that will assess content knowledge of health literacy topics such as the physical benefits of exercise, healthy eating, and avoiding risky behaviors. The focus will be on the short and long-term effects of healthy living on the function of the human body. In addition, each competitor will set a personal goal and document his or her efforts in a personalized Healthy Lifestyle notebook. The time period will begin on or after September 1st of the competition year, and will conclude at the specific conference at which the event is held. The notebook will document the individual competitor’s specific goal(s) and efforts to practice a healthier lifestyle through exercise, nutrition, and/or avoiding risky behaviors. The competitor will be judged on the progress made toward achieving his/her goal(s) and in living a healthier lifestyle.
Home Health Aide This event will consist of two rounds of competition. Round One will be a written, multiple choice test of knowledge and understanding. The top scoring competitors will advance to Round Two for the performance of selected skill procedure(s) identified in a written scenario. The scenario will require the use of critical thinking skills. The performance will be timed and evaluated according to the event guidelines.
HOSA Bowl Teams consisting of three-four (3-4) members each will take a written test in Round One. Top scoring teams advance to Round Two and compete by giving appropriate responses to items presented by a moderator. These items may be in the form of questions, incomplete statements, and/or definitions. Winners will be determined by a series of elimination rounds. The last remaining team becomes the first-place winner of a section. Section winners play in final rounds to determine the top three teams.
Interviewing Skills Competitors shall apply for any health care related position for which they are trained or and being trained. Competitors will prepare a cover letter and resume to bring with them to the conference. At the conference, competitors will complete a job application (at orientation) and participate in a job interview (assigned time received at orientation.).

Kaiser Permanente Healthcare Issues Exam This event shall be in the form of a 50 item multiple choice test and one essay question that will be graded only to break a tie. All questions will be written at a level to measure thinking skills. Competitors will have 1 hour to complete the test.
Knowledge Tests: Human Growth & Development, Pathophysiology, Concepts of Health Care, Pharmacology, and Nutrition Each "Knowledge Test" will be a 100 item multiple choice written exam with an essay tie-breaker question. Each test will be related to a specific career or specialty area from within the health care community or related information that applies to several health specialties. Questions will measure knowledge at the recall, application and analysis levels. Students will select only one test and each test will be considered a separate event. Students will be given 1 1/2 hours to complete the examination.
Life Support Skills The competitive event will consist of an evaluation of student performance of selected skill procedure(s) identified in a written scenario. The scenario will require the use of critical thinking skills. The performance will be timed and evaluated according to the event guidelines.
Medical Assisting This event will consist of two rounds of competition. Round One will be a written, multiple choice test of knowledge and understanding. The top scoring competitors will advance to Round Two for the performance of selected skill procedure(s) identified in a written scenario. The scenario will require the use of critical thinking skills. The performance will be timed and evaluated according to the event guidelines.
Medical Math This event shall be a written test dealing with selected problems involving conversions. This event shall be a written test dealing with selected problems involving conversions of Event: between the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales and the metric and household systems of measurement. It will also involve identification of related symbols and abbreviations. The competitors shall be expected to convert problems of weight, volume, and temperature by responding correctly to 50 multiple choice items in 1 ½ hours.
Medical Photography In this event, competitors will use digital photography to illustrate the health professions. Competitors will photograph three different health professionals, edit the photos using computer software technology, and then present the three printed pictures to a panel of judges.
Medical Reading This event is for teams of three (3) competitors per team. Round One will be a multiple choice test. The questions will require the competitors to apply, analyze, synthesize or evaluate information from the assigned books for the year. A selected number of teams will qualify for Round Two. Round Two teams will report to the site of the event where they will be presented questions by a panel of judges. Questions will be of the same caliber as Round One questions but in short answer format. Each team member will answer five (5) questions, and five (5) additional questions will be answered as a team.
Medical Spelling This event shall be divided into two rounds. Round One will be a 50-item written, multiple choice test in 1 hour. The competitors with the top 50% highest scores will proceed to Round Two. Round Two will be a "spell-down" where competitors will spell terms pronounced by a health care professional. Definitions will be provided if requested by the competitor. Competitors will be eliminated when a term is misspelled. The last remaining competitor in Round Two becomes the first-place winner.

MRC Partnership The MRC Partnership event is designed to encourage HOSA chapters to initiate and maintain a partnership with the Medical Reserve Corps. The partnership will promote and support the mission of HOSA, the mission of the Medical Reserve Corps, and the priorities of the United States Surgeon General. The event will consist of the implementation and documentation of partnership activities that contribute to strong, healthy and prepared communities.
National Recognition Program The HOSA member will create a portfolio of evidence of his/her accomplishments in preparation for a health career.
National Service Project The HOSA National Service Project involves the sponsorship of a national healthcare organization by local HOSA chapters. Local chapters plan service projects to support the selected organization. Chapters document their involvement and submit documentation to their state advisor by the state deadline to be eligible for national recognition.
Nursing Assisting This event will consist of two rounds of competition. Round One will be a written, multiple choice test of knowledge and understanding. The top scoring competitors will advance to Round Two for the performance of selected skill procedure(s) identified in a written scenario. The scenario will require the use of critical thinking skills. The performance will be timed and evaluated according to the event guidelines.
Outstanding HOSA Chapter The Outstanding HOSA Chapter event is a scrapbook prepared by HOSA student members describing the chapter's yearly program of activities that are consistent with the purpose of HOSA. It must include such items as: verification of membership, officers, local activities participation, state participation, and community activities. The competitor will turn in the notebook at the orientation and leave it to be judged without the competitor being present.
Parliamentary Procedure This event will involve two rounds of competition. Round One will consist of a written test to evaluate the team’s understanding of parliamentary procedure. The top scoring teams will advance to Round Two and will be given a secret problem with motions to perform during the meeting. The team has ten (10) minutes preparation time prior to the ten (10) minute demonstration of the meeting. All team members must be involved in the meeting.
Personal Care The competitive event will consist of an evaluation of students performance of selected skill procedure(s) identified in a written scenario. The performance will be timed and evaluated according to the event guidelines.
Physical Therapy This event will consist of two rounds of competition. Round One will be a written, multiple choice test of knowledge and understanding. The top scoring competitors will advance to Round Two for the performance of selected skill procedure(s) identified in a written scenario. The scenario will require the use of critical thinking skills. The performance will be timed and evaluated according to the event guidelines.
Prepared Speaking Competitors shall develop a speech related to the current year's National Conference theme. The theme for the year will be selected by the voting delegates and announced at the conclusion of the previous National Leadership Conference in June.
Public Health Emergency Preparedness This event involves a team of 2-4 members who select a topic of public health concern and create an effective public health presentation to educate the public on the chosen topic. Specific topic selection will be based on a category announced annually.
Public Service Announcement In this event, teams consisting of three-six (3-6) members will produce a 30-second Public Service Announcement (PSA). The PSA will promote a healthcare service organization, bring awareness to a healthcare situation, or educate the public at large in regard to health and well-being.
Researched Persuasive Speaking Competitors shall write a paper and develop a speech in which they must take a stand, either in favor of or opposed to a health related issue. Two topic areas will be selected each summer and will be announced in HOSA publications. Competitors select one of the topics and develop a speech and written paper to reflect the position taken on the selected topic, either for or against, yes or no.
Speaking Skills Competitors shall develop a speech related to the current year's National Conference theme. The theme for the year will be selected by the voting delegates and announced at the conclusion of the previous National Leadership Conference in June.
