Hey Guys!
Well, on Tuesday I started my VERY FIRST mentorship for this year. For the next three weeks I get to hang out in a Family Practice office and spend time with some of the residents there. I am only two days into it and I LOVE IT! I’m not sure if family practice is the thing for me, but all of the doctors are really enthusiastic and they’re all great teacher, even this early into their careers. They first day didn’t go as smoothly as I had hoped though. I was watching an abscess get drained and I started to feel myself get a little… uh… woozy. After a few minutes I was fine so I went back to watch them pack the wound area and send the pt on his way. Right now I need a topic regarding family practice that I can do a presentation on… any ideas?

Well.
Today was pretty awesome! Today was the fall conference at Oakland U that I have been working on (and stressing out about!) for almost a week. I had an amzing time, not only with my fellow officers and good friends, but also with the great people I met at the conference. I was really worried about being able to plan this out and make sure everything runs smoothly. But in the end, everything worked out fantabiously : )
Another absolutely swellerific part of my day was that I actually got to do vital signs on a patient by myself today. This was cool because I’ve never actually taken a patient to the room, gotten their weight and taken their vitals. By Myself. : )

Greetings!
Well, a couple days ago. I started my new job. : ) The reason I find this so exciting is that it is my first job in healthcare….major milestone! It’s really exciting to actually put to use skills that I have learned last year… and biulding on the skills I learn this year. A large portion of the health occupations class I am in right now is learning medical terminology. Knowing medical terminology is also a big part of my job. Even the knowledge, experiences and professionalism I have gained from HOSA are putting me a step ahead. I really enjoy my new job, and I’m really thankful for the oppurtunitiy.

Just earlier today, a couple of my advisors were talking to my class about dealing with the curveballs that are thrown at you during life. It’s funny how you can be prepared for something heading your way without really knowing it. I was just hit with a major curveball. It’s heartwrenching and makes me feel physically sick, not because of how it affects me. Because it doesn’t really, it hurts because of how it affects the ones I love. I’m sure everyone has experienced something similar, it kind of just knocks you off balance for a bit. But I think the secret is to keep walking, and remember that “This too shall pass.” : )

Hey y’all…
Well, we are nearing the end of our summer… in a matter of days we will all be heading back to our respective schools for another year of learning…. and HOSA!
When I first realized how close the pending school year was, my reaction was… less than excited… but then I remembered that with the new school year comes the new HOSA year and that definately ended my back-to-school blues. I can’t wait to see everyone and hear how they are getting involved in HOSA.
But that said, enjoy the last few days of summer! Have fun with your friends and family this Labor Day, but be sure to stay safe!
Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Hey everyone!
The name’s Jessica and I am your Michigan HOSA President-elect.
I think I will start off by saying a little about moi.
I am a senior in high school and I currently live in Bay City. I got involved in HOSA in the fall of ‘07 when I was in the Dental Occupations class at my career center, and I have been hooked ever since. I’ve actually been interested in healthcare since I was a wee little one, so I was pretty excited to get involved. Outside of healthcare, my interests include photography, hanging with friends and anything involving food.
So tonight my boyfriend and I went to this little Indian restaurant in Saginaw. This was my first time trying anything from this particular type of cuisine, so I was pretty stoked. Once I looked over the menu though, I felt a little overwhelmed, not to mention silly, especially when I tried to pronounce the names of the various dishes. Of course I haven’t heard of any of them so I ended up asking the waiter to make a recommendation. He did, and I have to say, it was pretty much amazing. I had a curry with chicken and potatoes in it and this awesome bread stuff that was like a non-sugary elephant ear. I can honestly say Indian food is my new favorite. After dinner we went over to a little Indian market that was a few feet down from the restaurant. I bought a bottle of this Indian soda called Limca. The soda vaguely tasted like what I would expect Clorox to. But the bottle was pretty sweet, and at a dollar, it was worth a try.
I love trying new things, even though I might not really be sure about it at first. Trying this food tonight gave me the oppurtunity to move outside the bubble that we all can get stuck in. So if you find yourself looking for something out of the ordinary, just go for it. (And seriously consider the Indian food, it was fantastic!!)
