JUDGE VOLUNTEERING
Each year, Michigan HOSA conducts nine regional-level, one middle school state-level, and one secondary/postsecondary state-level competitive event conferences. Students and teachers from across Michigan gather to compete in events such as Biomedical Debate, CPR/First Aid, Prepared Speaking, Nursing Assisting, and MANY more.
HOSA’s competitive events require judges to help recognize the best of the best among Michigan’s health science students. Michigan HOSA seeks industry professionals to volunteer as judges for its competitive events.
Your willingness to serve as a judge is vital to the success of our conferences. If you are interested in judging, please complete the information below. Please note, there are two separate forms; one for regional conference interest, and one for state conferences.
You will be provided with guidelines that thoroughly explain each event you have been selected to judge. When you arrive at the conference, a judge coordinator will answer your questions and guide you to the appropriate event location.

What can I expect at a regional conference?

Tentative schedule:

Arrive between 8:15-8:30 AM

Judge orientation 8:45 AM (and small breakfast/beverages provided)

Begin judging around 9:00/9:30 AM

Most judging lasts 2-4 hours

Judges are free to leave when their event is done!

Depending on the number of competitors in each event, we may ask you to judge multiple events, if willing. For example, if there are only five teams registered for Community Awareness and five for Health Education, we may ask you to judge both events, for a total of 10 presentations.

Is there any compensation for judging?

MI HOSA does not pay or reimburse judges/volunteers for time, travel or lodging. We are happy to provide documentation for service hours/continuing education credits and will give you a small token of appreciation!

Do I have to be in healthcare or have medical training?

Judges do NOT have to have medical/clinical experience, but some events do require clinical skills, or past training/experience in those skills (i.e., EMT, Sports Medicine, Nursing Assisting, etc.). Many other events are presentation/speech based, so any professional is encouraged!

What do I have to wear?

Please wear business casual/professional dress or industry attire (scrubs, uniform, etc.).

My child/friend/someone I know is competing in an event. Can I still judge?

You can still judge at that regional or state conference, but you cannot judge the competitive event of someone you know.

Is there a virtual option for judging, or do I have to physically attend the conference?

Some events have a prejudging component which is done virtually, but all other judging takes place at the conference, therefore, judges must be present. If you are only interested in assisting with virtual prejudging, please select that option on the sign-up form.

I am a HOSA Alumni, can I volunteer to judge?

YES! All alumni, TWO years out of high school, are welcome to volunteer as a judge. If you are one year out of high school, you are welcome to volunteer as a patient, test proctor, or event manager (if opportunities are availble), but you cannot judge until two years out of high school.
